News and Views of Clark County - Camas Growing With Nature

Camas in The Spotlight - Growing City Keeps Its Small Town Charm

When we moved to Camas ten years ago, we felt the energy of a small town coming into its own - the downtown was re-emerging as a destination spot, new businesses were moving into the area, and there was a general sense of growth and well-being.  Even during the 2008 recession, while the rest of the region took a hit, there was still as sense of moving forward.  Now that economic recovery is in full upswing, people are taking note.

This transformation was noted in Sunday’s feature article in The Columbian - the local newspaper that covers Clark County. It confirms what we have felt for the past ten years living here - Camas is progressing into a model city on the edge of nature with an eye towards responsible development. The full article can be found online.

Camas 1950

Camas was a single-economy mill town since its founding in the 1800s. But that changed in the 1980s when leaders decided to earmark and develop land to attract new enterprises.

Since then, companies like WaferTech, Underwriters Lab, Sharp, and Fishers Investment  have located here.  Mid-sized and start-up tech companies have also made the move, shifting the economy to green, professional, white-collar jobs.  The median income level here is a third higher than in Clark County and in Washington State (which, itself, is the 13th highest state in the nation).

The city has also made education one of its top priorities.  Camas High School ranks 26th nationally out of 458 - the only school in Clark County other than Vancouver School of Arts to even make the list.

The city has big plans for growth - it doubled in population between 1990 and 2000 - and that is projected to continue for 20 years. But city leaders also want to preserve its natural surroundings and small town charm as much as possible.

“You’ve got these great forests that are going to remain in the city forever,” the Mayor Scott Higgins states, pointing to parks surrounding Lacamas Lake and the plans to add a new trail to the North.  Downtown Camas regularly hosts events that make it a destination spot for families, shoppers, and diners - earning recognition by Family Circle magazine as one of the best family-friendly towns in the U.S.

ViewHomes™ grew out of our passion for nature, beautiful surroundings, and peaceful environments. Starting together in an urban environment, over the years we've gravitated towards areas with smaller populations and less density. We now enjoy our lifestyle in a rural environment, but with close proximity to metropolitan areas where we appreciate all the amenities of fine restaurants, shopping, and an easy drive to an international airport.
Living in ViewHomes™ is like having “elbowroom for the soul”.

Hi Debb, what a transformation. Isn't great to see all the growth in your town. One thing for sure, Camas WA still has that small town atmosphere.

Thanks all, it's got it all. And yet, still room to improve and grow.

Hi Debb - Through your blogging, I have come to recognize in Camas those characteristics that I value in a community. Many of them are the same things I love about living where I do. We are indeed fortunate.

Bernie, you knocked it out of the park! You added flavors and colors to Camas that most of us were unaware of. I'm excited to see what the two of you powerhouses are accomplishing in "your neck of the woods". "nature as neighbors"--I love that phrase.
