Search For That Perfect Tree in Nature - You Might Find a Friend
Every year we go out to hunt the perfect live Christmas tree -in this area “U-Cut” is an especially attractive option for many families. For us, this annual ritual kick-starts our holidays - a short hike in the woods, scouring the area for the “perfect” tree, then cutting and hauling it back home to deorate. ( That's me, Debb in the white baseball cap.)
So it was with great curiosity and some apprehension we visited the tree farm right down the road from us. It is not a big production as U-Cut sites go - two small huts at the entrance, only open 5 days a week, no concession stands, or workers dressed as Santa helpers. Just a guy and his son who was only helping out that day. Usually he works alone.
The toned-down atmosphere was perfect for us. The land is on a gentle slope with a great view of a wide, expansive bluff overlooking the Columbia River. The trees all grew naturally - they had not been pruned - allowing them to fill out in their natural shape, some with quirky, gangly branches. A few families wandered around looking for their perfect tree - the kids chattering with excitement. “Here’s one!” “Here’s another one!” “Let’s get one for Grandma!”
We strolled, soaking in the view and the ambient excitement, eventually finding our perfect tree. As we started to cut the trunk with our hand saw, the owner showed up on his ATV and a chain saw. “Here, I’ll get that for you” he said as he quickly cut the base and loaded it up in his hauler.
As we loaded the tree into our truck, we chatted with he owner. He has been farming the 30 acres for 50 years, growing produce and livestock, eventually transitioning into the tree farm. With an elfish grin as he told stories about the customers who have come through over the years, and have become friends - returning every year to this quiet spot. He talked about how much he loved living and working in a natural setting and meeting people who share his appreciation for nature. Nature As Neighbors - It's Good for the Soul.
ViewHomes™ grew out of our passion for nature, beautiful surroundings, and peaceful environments. Starting together in an urban environment, over the years we've gravitated towards areas with smaller populations and less density. We now enjoy our lifestyle in a rural environment, but with close proximity to metropolitan areas where we appreciate all the amenities of fine restaurants, shopping, and an easy drive to an international airport.
Living in ViewHomes™ is like having “elbowroom for the soul”.
